CHATEAU SUR MER - WETMORE BEDROOM

CHATEAU SUR MER - WETMORE BEDROOM
Newport
Rhode Island

The ceiling in the Wetmore Bedroom dates to the period of re-decoration under William Morris Hunt. Over the years a combination of plaster and paint adhesion problems created small but noticeable areas of loose and missing paint and gold leaf. Due in large part to their size and thickness, the loose paint was successfully consolidated and re-attached using rabbit skin glue. Areas of loss were cleaned, conserved and in painted with matching paints, while missing gold leaf was sized and re-applied. This approach was minimally invasive, while restoring the original look of the decorative program.
