Over time the altar and reredos had become discolored from heating system and candle soot. In addition a water leak through the masonry wall had seriously discolored and spalled the limestone altar. The soot was removed with a stone cleaning solution . The mineral salt deposits were removed with a solution formulated for that purpose as well as light manual abrasion. The missing section was then formed using modeling paste.
