Although the original trompe L’oeil decoration had been painted over in the late nineteenth century, peeling paint revealed its existence. Through the creation of a special chemical process, the oil-base over-paint was successfully removed without damaging the underlying original decoration. As a result the entire decorative program used in the sanctuary could be preserved rather than re-painted. |
